At a glance
The Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development (ODAP) workshops produce replicas of ancient and modern works of art from museums throughout Greece: a tradition dating back 100 years and counting more than 1,000 casts, which guarantees faithful copies of exceptional quality, true to the originals.
It should be noted that the 2016 amendment of Article 2 of Law 3028/2002 on the Protection of Antiquities (now incorporated in Law 4858/2021), established that the moulds (the casts produced from the original works) and the models (the first copies produced from the moulds) shall be kept exclusively in the possession of the Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development (ODAP) and their circulation on the market shall be prohibited. Authentic replicas are only those that are produced with casts from the models and bear the original seal of the Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development (ODAP) incorporated during their production, thus preserving the high added value of the masterpieces in our museums for the Greek State.
Our replicas are available for sale at ODAP’s Museum Shops and online at our Hellenic Heritage Store, and are also sent to universities and other institutions for educational purposes.
The workshops
The Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development (ODAP) workshops are the only ones that produce certified replicas of the masterpieces in our museum collections. The workshops are located in the area of Agios Ioannis Rentis and are housed in state-of-the-art facilities that include also conservation workshops. ODAP’s workshops producing replicas operate also in Pella, and plans are underway to re-open the workshops in the Heraklion Industrial Area to meet increased production demands in the Region of Crete.
The replicas produced at our workshops are handmade by talented sculptors, painters, conservators and craftspeople drawing upon extensive expertise, while RRF resources were used to supply and install 3D printers to make the best of modern 3D scanning technologies.
Synergies
The Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development (ODAP) has signed memoranda of cooperation with the Athens School of Fine Arts and the Digital Arts Department of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens for the purpose of sharing the long-standing experience and specialised knowledge of these institutions. By virtue of these memoranda, ODAP’s technical equipment is put to use in the best possible way, and advanced new methods for producing replicas are being explored, while scientific cooperation between the institutions is strengthened through mutual exchange visits to benefit from research and experience in casting techniques. 3D techniques are standardised in order to ensure conservation and identify options for the realisation, presentation and showcasing of casts taken of ancient sculptural artworks.
The Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development (ODAP) is now ready to welcome undergraduate and graduate students from the Athens School of Fine Arts who will undergo practical training under the supervision of ODAP’s qualified staff, acquiring hands-on experience and contributing to the Organization’s production process.
The cooperation between the two parties aims at ensuring continuous training and exchange of scientific knowledge and developing synergies that would contribute significantly to upgrading the operation and practices of both parties.
Students
The Monuments and Exhibits Copyist major has been added to the specializations offered by the Public Higher Vocational Training Schools. This is a new innovative programme for artists who wish to specialize in the production of faithful copies of ancient artifacts.
